Inside the Curriculum

Language Arts

Our esteemed Language Arts program is built on the renowned Journeys Language Arts Program, the Writing Practice Program (WPP), and Word Voyage.

Journeys. provides a close-reading routine and online tools that empower students to read rigorous texts. It weaves close-reading skills into a practical routine where students read and reread for a variety of purposes, digging deeper into the text and reinforcing concepts with their eBook and Close Reader.

Writing Practice Program (WPP). lets students build their writing skills at their own pace with individualized attention. This online program is available 24/7 from any computer with internet access, so teachers can let students challenge themselves at home or in the classroom.

Word Voyage. is an interactive online tool for grades 4 to 12 that gives students valuable exposure to the English language. They explore meaning, usage, and etymology in depth to supplement and reinforce classroom learning.

We proudly use the Singapore Math program, which teaches students to learn and master mathematical concepts in greater detail. This world-renowned program breaks concepts into three stages of learning: concrete, pictorial, and abstract. That progression builds more networks in a student’s mind and helps them see math concepts as a three-dimensional model rather than flat, hard-to-grasp ideas. With guidance from our gifted teachers, students leave the classroom with greater cognitive dexterity that helps them in other subjects as well.

Students benefit from a hands-on learning environment that pushes science out of the books and into tangible exploration. We engage students in collecting, analyzing, and using data while developing core skills. Each lesson is built on the premise that science should practice discipline, curiosity, hypothesis, and experimentation, and each one culminates in a formulated analysis and presentation of the findings. These skills help students develop a well-rounded mind that is evaluative and curious about the world around them.

Our history and social studies curriculum adopts the California standards and framework and integrates the current common core standards. The program lets students explore history from multiple perspectives, including the individual, family, regional, and community. The coursework is grounded on five fundamental strands, which, together with the school ESLRs and the essentials of our faith, guide and shape our study of human history.

Historical Reflection. captures the essence of studying human history throughout the elementary grades, covering the people, places, events, and ideas that shaped different regions and eras.

Critical Thinking. develops students’ ability to understand the complexity of the past and the multiple causes and effects behind events.

Historical Inquiry. combines reflection and critical thinking as students ask who, what, where, when, and why in their course of study.

Contemporary Analysis. invites active discussion and debate about the historical roots of today’s environment.

Identity Development. is the process by which students grow as individuals through the study of history, with self-discovery and self-awareness as natural by-products.

The Arabic curriculum is built on thematic units grounded in standards-based instruction. Lessons are interactive, fun, and use authentic, age-appropriate materials that build students’ ability to read, write, listen, and speak in Arabic. Islamic manners are taught as part of cultural practices, and students read stories, watch videos, converse in Arabic, and connect with students at other schools through letters.

Compared with other Islamic schools, our students show advanced listening and speaking skills. With a team of five Arabic teachers led by a qualified department head, students are assessed and monitored regularly. In 2012, Minaret Academy was awarded an Arabic Language Curriculum Development Grant from Qatar Foundation, and our Arabic program remains a pioneer in the field and a role model for schools across the nation.
